«Bottle» surfboards

Back in 2007, during a visit to Jamaica, Jairo Lyumerets — surfer from Brazil, designed a surfboard, using as the basis plastic bottles which strewn the whole coast. Returning to his homeland, Lyumerets with his friends decided to teach local children how having in the arsenal a number of plastic bottles to end up with a finished board.

In such an uncomplicated way they decided to «kill two birds with one blow» — to popularize surfing and to raise environmental awareness among the younger generation.

The idea grew into a social project — Projeto Prancha Ecologica, which mission is to demonstrate excellent compatibility of sport with care for our environment.

As is known, the boards are made of polystyrene and epoxy resin. One of the founders of the project studied the effect of these substances on the environment and found out that they cause serious waste and pollution.

Of course the board made of the bottles is suitable only for beginners, not for professional sportsmen. But they have become popular among Brazilian pupils from the schools for the poor.

Even the most well-known Brazilian surfers had experienced the board «at yourself».
