Crystallizing and right care for marble and granite floor

The word “marble” is translated from Greek as “shining stone”. Because of its bright shine a lot of halls and lobbies are decorated with this stone. Marble is a roach, which consists of calcite and dolomite, and can also have both of these minerals in its structure.

There is often some other additions of minerals in marble, these minerals usually influence the color of a marble. In general, it is not only the structure of marble that influence its design, but also the direction how the stone was actually sawn. Bizarre cracks in the structure are very interesting for many architects, designers and owners of well-established buildings.

But if you want your marble or granite covering to stay good-looking, it is better to maintain a good care of it. In most cases, people don’t do it, that’s why the look of the floor transforms from shining and nice to scuffed and dimmed. As a result the main purpose of using such an expensive and luxury material as marble and granite fails, more of that, it becomes a problem, how to return its look in the original state of a new thing.

Marble is not very solid and its top has a light spongy structure. It is easy to scratch the marble or make it dirty because of coloring agents, for example, by coffee or tea. To make a marble maintenance easier — is only one of all works that can be done with a help of special detergents for crystallization process.

As a result of crystallization, between crystallization vat (a powder or weakly acid agent) and material that contains calcium (marble, limestone and other) some thermo-chemical processes happen, which gives natural shine for the stone and make the marble floor stronger.

After this procedure, floor covering becomes waterproof and its durability rises. Scratched floor is dispersing light, which is why it doesn’t shine. On the contrary, polished after crystallization marble reflects light and gets kind of glassiness.

Crystallization process is necessary in places where lots of people come and in places, where after intensive use there are damaged spots on the floor and the loss of shine. Marble can be ruined by continuous external impacts; it can also be damaged by using the wrong detergents.

Surface texture of marble covering and flooring
If you want to understand better the glossary of cleaning companies and the main content of crystallization process, you need to know the type of surface, from which the floor is made. Here is a list of surfaces facing slabs:

Sawn surface
This harsh surface of irregular rough slabs, which have asperity relief nearly 2 mm. On this surface it is possible to see the design and a color of the stone.

Bush hammered or dotty surface
Such a surface can be defined as steady rough, its relief has some irregularities nearly 5 mm. For example, bush hammered granite is often used on buildings from outside to construct the steps, perimeter walk or grounds. The main value of steady roughness shows up in those places where slippery polished surfaces cannot be used.

Smooth matted or glossed surface
Such type of facing slabs has strongly marked design and is used when there is no necessity in glassy shine. Glossy surface is common to see on granite slabs.

Polished surface
Polishing makes marble design look flatter and makes the height of relief irregularities smaller than 5 mm. Such an equal rough surface is also used to decrease sliding on the floor. Polished surface is not used on patterned or dark stones because of hiding the color.

Polished marble stones have glassiness shine; reflect some details of things which stand on the floor, and also totally hide traces of working up the marble while previous works. Because of glassiness effect the polishing process got a name «rolling luster». To polishing advantages we may refer additional exposure and emphasizing the natural picture and stone color.

The main disadvantage of surface that you will get is a high slipperiness, especially after water ingress. That’s why before using the polished stones on outdoor stairs and floor, and also while constructing flooring inside damp premises, bush hammered stripes with rough surface should be applied to reduce sliding.

Heat-treated surface
This rough surface has some traces of peeling and looks a bit «fritted». Such effect gives a chance to show the structure and color of granite more brightly than in polishing process. Heat-treated surfaces are mostly used for coating outdoor stairs and grounds in front the entries.

The effect of false ageing of natural stone can be used on soft and sponge kinds of stones. Such an old textured marble is often used not only for covering surfaces. Decorative elements might also be made of it: different sockets, mosaic pelisse and curbs.

To make flooring inside the damp premise, can be used marble stones processed with sand. Air-sand processing allows hiding from eyes different scratches and others damages of the stone, and also will raise the safety and comfort of the surface.

Crystallization vans strengthen a marble surface and give to it an additional shine.
Marble crystallization can be done not necessarily after polishing process, but even before it – the result will differ only with acquired character of a stone. In first case, marble will get the glassiness effect, in the second – silver color. Huge impact has the technological process, which is quite time-consuming and can be done only by experienced specialists with a help of special equipment, polishing tools and detergents that have calcium in its content.

Such detergents come into reaction with marble and make it stronger. Marble consist of lublinite and its structure is very sensitive to calcium impact.

Crystallization is used for strengthening and refreshing flooring, to make it last longer in a good condition. Thanks to this process, floor becomes safer and everyday cleaning becomes easier. Powdered agents (crystallization vans) have abrasive character, which is why while crystallization the additional stone polishing is necessary.

80% of crystallization van body consists of abrasive elements. That is why the crystallization process is considered to be the last stage of polishing, when on marble top disappear strong connections, cracks and scratches.

So, clients can save money on polishing process and grinding, which is more expensive than complex crystallization, if done separately. While doing the crystallization, the quality of floor covering stays perfect for a long time. So the most advantageous thing to do is to crystallize marble and granite floor in big premises.

The stronger marble surface is, the rarer periodical polishing is needed.
The complex process of marble floor care consists of the following stages:

Deep stone cleaning by means of washing with special agent and floor waxer. Such cleaning will help to not just wash out the dirt but to remove it from the deepest parts of the rock.

If flooring looks very used with all the differences in stone levels (a coin does not slide from one stone to another), refurbishing polishing of marble surface should be done. In some other cases an additional stitches cut with thin cutter could be needed for the next filling them with a special coating.

Marble crystallization is usually done with a help of acid agents. While this process, the top layer of the stone is melt a bit and all the scratches and cracks are filled with the solid. At the same time marble polishing is done with a help of abrasive agents.

For additional marble shine protection, non-acid consolidator is used, and also some agents that strengthen the resistance against sliding (to make the floor match the European standards of safety). If necessary, some agents, which add color to covering, should be used.

Usually, marble is scratched by small pieces of dust and dirt that is why the entry should be always equipped with special protective systems against dirt. For everyday marble care which was not crystallized before, is not enough to use just clean water, because it will not help with removing all dirt types and using abrasive agents causes unprotected marble damaging.

But after the marble crystallization, everyday cleaning can be done with a help of soft duster and clean water. It is also important to clean the floor regularly with a right-chosen detergent.

If marble strength is raised, you can forget for some time about periodical polishing and grinding its surface.

When calling a specialized cleaning company stuff, you will get a good service and will be sure that the quality of service is guaranteed.
